America Online Image Quality

America Online compresses images on web pages to make them load faster. Unfortunately, this also degrades their quality, making some images look blurry and pixely. If you're using AOL and you'd like to remedy this little problem, just perform the following steps.

AOL 6.0

  1. Click on "Settings" in your toolbar and choose "Preferences".
  2. Click on the link that says "Internet Properties (WWW)".
  3. A screen will appear that allows you to change your online preferences. Click on the tab on the very top that says "Web Graphics".
  4. You'll be presented with three choices. Click on the circle next to "Never compress graphics". If that circle is already filled in, then you're okay.
  5. Click "Okay" at the bottom of the WWW preferences window. It will close and you'll return to the main preferences screen.
  6. When you're ready, close AOL and restart your computer to see the effects.

AOL 4.0/5.0

  1. Click on "My AOL" in your toolbar and choose "Preferences".
  2. Click on the box that says "WWW".
  3. A screen will appear that allows you to change your online preferences. Click on the tab on the very top that says "Web Graphics".
  4. A checkbox will appear with the phrase "use compressed graphics" next to it. If there is a check in the box, click on it to remove the check. If there is no check in the box, then you're okay.
  5. Click "Okay" at the bottom of the WWW preferences window. It will close and you'll return to the main preferences screen.
  6. When you're ready, close AOL and restart your computer to see the effects.

AOL 3.0

  1. Click on the globe in your AOL toolbar to open the World Wide Web.
  2. Click on the button in the WWW toolbar that says "prefs".
  3. A screen will appear that allows you to change your online preferences. Click on the tab on the very top that says "Graphics".
  4. A checkbox will appear with the phrase "use compressed graphics" next to it. If there is a check in the box, click on it to remove the check. If there is no check in the box, then you're okay.
  5. Click "Okay" at the bottom of the preferences window. It will close and you'll return to the WWW screen.
  6. When you're ready, close AOL and restart your computer to see the effects.
